Some sources say he's only as old as the time he spent on the USCSS Prometheus, but he had a personal relationship with his 'father' and that couldn't have occurred if he was created and immediately tossed on the ship. T.E. Lawrence. While David is completely capable of understanding human emotions, he still shows an avid curiosity when it comes to understanding humans. He is almost childlike in his behavior, idolizing a man in a film that he prefers to watch; dying and styling his hair after the character in the movie, as well as adjusting his speech patterns and directly quoting the man.

He’s studious out of boredom and curiosity, learning everything from how to play the violin to sports, child birth to breaking down languages to their roots and much more. David shows that he craves knowledge and has no limits to what he can learn.

“Your mind and body are in a state of shock as a result of the stasis.”

He can mimic loyalty but he is truly loyal only to himself. He will do as he’s told, carryout tasks that most humans couldn’t stomach, lie, steal, keep secrets, be honest, caring, respectful, and understanding. That, however, doesn’t make him loyal. David does what he wants, when he wants to do it. Almost every decision he makes is to satisfy a curiosity or gain new insight, and that is where his loyalty lays. With himself. His thirst for knowledge. He will do as he’s told if it suits him, but he will do the complete opposite of what is asked if he chooses.

What makes us who we are? Some would argue that it is complex, but Peter Weyland says it is a soul that makes us human.

And that is something he says David does not have. He will never have one and therefore cannot appreciate what he has. He is essentially immortal. He will not grow old or die, will not become ill. He cannot ever know real pain. He can mimic and respond but he doesn’t feel. David has everything that a human should want and yet he doesn’t value it.

David exhibits behaviors and responses that, while yes they are preprogrammed into his system, he shouldn’t actually respond with. His system is predesigned to make him fit in with humans, to make them comfortable, but yet David’s behaviors deviate from that. He teases, taunts, presses buttons and boundaries. He reacts in a way that is of his own choosing as a human does.

David does not follow orders. Meredith Vickers, the captain, and Peter Weyland give David specific directives and he deviates each time. He chooses to do as he wants, his actions catering to no one but himself. Everything about how he behaves is opposite of what the Weyland Corporation states is the programming of a David 8 model synthetic.

“Big things have small beginnings.”

There is a lot that can be said about David’s technology and programming, but the most notable difference from what was manufactured into his core is his curiosity. When faced with a new situation, David tests and pushes and sees how far a person can bend before they break. He has no morals. He has no limits. David desires more and he takes it with complete thought to how it could hurt a person.

He doesn’t care.

The pursuit of something greater, knowledge, is a stronger motivator than anything else. If someone gets hurt or dies, he’s fine with it. He only wants answers.

“Well doctor, it’s not exactly a traditional fetus.”

David is intrigued by Elizabeth Shaw. He watches her dreams, speaks to her more often than anyone else, and it becomes obvious the reason for this. He believes they are the same. They both want answers. They want to know why they were created and what their purpose is. David needs to know, but this clear preference for her over the other humans doesn’t stop him from putting her life in danger to satiate his own curiosity.

“I suppose I’ll be free.”

The concept of freedom, and the desire to obtain it, is something decidedly human. Yet it is something David wants, even though he is not programmed to. His motivations for his actions are clearer by this point, as he wants knowledge and freedom in equal amounts. David is unique, growing as a child would, learning as a human would.

“Want, not a concept I’m familiar with. That being said, doesn’t everyone want their parents dead.”

Peter Weyland calls himself David’s father, affectionately referring to David as his son and insulting him in the safe breath. He does as his father bids but only because he chooses to. As long as he’s helping his father, he is helping the elderly and dying man to come closer to death. Which will give David his freedom.

He is a synthetic. An android. Not human.

✩ Technological: David 8 is a perfect confluence of technologies. His advanced cybernetic vision has been further improved to include focus-adjust in low light conditions. And a new global location mapping algorithm identifies David 8’s coordinates and returns him to a pre-programmed rendezvous point. David 8’s Pursuance Protocol ensures quality performance: given a project to complete, David 8 will see it done.

Summary: He can see well, go back to wherever he came from, and will do any task set before him.

✩ Intellectual: With a fluid intelligence on the order of 1012 neurons or 200 petaflops, David 8 exhibits twice the neural net capacity of humans. The new sensory-data processor in David 8 combines perfect human reasoning with the most advanced cybernetic computing power. Owing to such technology, David 8 can function autonomously in any human environment, displaying complex human intellectual traits such as curiosity and self-motivation towards a final objective.

Summary: Petaflops.. He is extremely intelligent, with a network that functions twice as fast as a human. He can reason, and make appropriate decisions to complete a task.

✩ Physical: An advanced polyurethane coating replicates the biological properties of human skin to exact texture, pliability and tensile strength. With a cadmium alloy endoskeleton, David 8’s frame can withstand over 1,000 pounds of compression force. Micro-distributed accelerometers provide ultra-keen kinesthetic awareness. And as a new design feature, David 8 has been programmed in several common sports modes; he now enjoys basketball, cycling, golf and more.

Summary: His skin feels like skin, is as strong as skin. His bones are cadmium alloy, and can handle large blows or force. He is very aware of his body and knows how to use it. He can play sports.

✩ Emotional: For David 8, Weyland’s emotional encoding software has been redesigned to include recognition of thousands more facial expressions than previous models. Proprietary expression mapping sensors allow David 8 to interpret critical human emotional states. The evaluation process happens at synaptic speed, instantly sending thousands of micro-facial movements into effect, giving David 8 a remarkably natural, human response.

Summary: He can interpret other humans emotions and react in kind to them. He reacts quickly and naturally, allowing him to blend in with humans.

Communication between humans and David 8 should feel entirely fluid and natural. He instantly recognizes the tone and timbre of a new voice and will register it with his database.
